You can capture beautiful images of your family underwater during your beach vacation.

The pictures you take during your Gulf Shores vacation will likely be among your most treasured souvenirs, so you're going to want to make sure they are stellar images. Here are some tips for snapping wonderful photos underwater, which is a unique and whimsical way to remember your trip.

Tips for taking underwater photographs

Vacationing in the Gulf Shores area allows you and your loved ones to take part in many unique experiences. Whether you're having some hands-on time with an animal at the local zoo or diving into the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico for the first time, you are sure to enjoy some thrilling events during your stay.

What's the best way to remember these amazing times? Many travelers may turn to items like souvenirs, but for most, the ideal method of remembering is through fantastic photos taken throughout the vacation. These images don't have to be restricted to the land, however. In fact, some of the coolest pictures may be taken underwater. If you've invested in the right waterproof case for your camera and want to start collecting memories, it would be wise to take advantage of a few tips that enhance each photograph as well as your personal experience snapping these images.

Watch the area

You can capture beautiful images of your family underwater during your beach vacation.Safety is of paramount importance when you're heading beneath the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. The first thing you have to do is get comfortable and make sure the area you are shooting in is safe for you and your family. For the most part this won't be a problem, as the shores outside of Gulf Shores beach houses are generally quite calm and secure. However, before you become engrossed in your photography, complete a scan of the area to see if there is any marine life or natural habitats about. This will allow you to steer clear of fragile areas.

Get up close

It is important to remember that water is not like any other medium you may have worked with before. The liquid will drastically affect the color, contrast and sharpness of your photographs, and you won't be able to take quality pictures at a great distance. Instead, you'll have to get as close as possible to the subject, regardless of whether it's native marine life or your own family member. Try to get within a foot of the subject, taking care not to disturb natural life. It may be best to let your loved ones know that you have to be in close proximity for a photo so they will not be frightened when you swim up to them.

When in doubt, look up

You may be intrigued by things that catch your eye below the surface, but for the best photographs, you should aim to swim low and shoot in an upward direction. This will create the best possible composition for the photo, due to elements such as lighting, according to Underwater Photography Guide. Just as when you take pictures on land, you should keep the sun or light source behind you. Also, try to stick relatively close to the surface. Once you dip below about 20 feet, you'll start to lose the light, and your pictures will suffer, the source reported.

Similarly, the water ripples and light rays that come into play near the surface of the water can make for some stunning photographs. While you shouldn't restrict yourself to just this area, taking advantage of the natural beauty and effects, as well as the image quality, is something you will want to consider.

Capture moments

The action going on underwater is certainly exciting, but using an underwater camera is an ideal way to snap photos of some of the things happening on the water's surface. For example, watching your significant other steady themselves on a stand-up paddleboard for the first time or savoring the joy on your child's face as they float on the Gulf of Mexico is lovely, and a waterproof camera allows you to capture these moments for all eternity.

Instead of forcing your family to pose for pictures underwater, simply go with the flow and try to snap candid photos. Formal pictures can always be taken on the gorgeous landscape outside of your Gulf Shores vacation rental - the unique environment found underwater should be reserved for equally special experiences.

Play with perspective

If nothing else, you shouldn't hesitate to take risks with some of your photos. Trying new things with regard to perspective, such as swimming alongside a family member as they snorkel or skimming the surface of the water as someone body surfs can create unique photographs that you will cherish forever. The image should appear natural, so even if the subject is not centered, the picture can still be spectacular.
