Celebrate Dad at the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival
Renting condos in Gulf Shores is a perfect way to celebrate Father's Day with the whole family. Whether you rent a two-bedroom Gulf Shores beach house for your nuclear family or book a larger condo for members of the extended family as well, time spent with relatives on the beautiful Alabama beaches is sure to be a memorable way for Dad to spend his special day.
And there are a few events going on in the Gulf Shores region that offer additional fun for Dad and the kids. The Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival takes place in Foley on Father's Day weekend every year, and is a perfect opportunity for the whole family to get together and enjoy a host of summer activities.
See the balloons fly
Families can expect to see some massive, colorful works of art floating gracefully through the sky above South Baldwin county during Father's Day weekend, as more than 50 hot air balloonists prepare to land at the festival in Foley, Ala. Balloons of all different shapes, sizes and colors will jazz up the Gulf Coast's air space all weekend long, even at night. Both Friday and Saturday night, the pilots will light up the skies with in glowing balloons - they thrill the crowds with their balloons illuminated from within. The result is a sight to behold for kids and parents alike.
Balloons set sail around 6 a.m., which is one of the best times to see them. It's worth getting up that early to watch this vibrant display of colors soar across the bright blue skies of the Gulf Coast! In the mornings, families can watch as balloonists try to hit competition targets on the festival grounds in Foley. Of course, the evening is also a can't-miss time to see the balloons fly. Half of the balloons take off at dusk (weather permitting) and the other half delight festival goers with their glowing orbs. During the day, winds are too strong to fly the balloons, but there are plenty of other activities to keep you entertained.
The rest of the fest
Although the balloons are the highlight of this event, they are far from the only attraction visitors can expect to see while there. There is free entertainment like live music that ranges from country to rock and roll, as well as kids' events like an alligator petting station, face painting and dancing in the children's village section of the festival. In the arts and crafts village and retail marketplace section, Mom and Dad may enjoy seeing daily demonstrations from local craftspeople and chefs or shopping for unique souvenirs. There are plenty of snacks available from a variety of vendors to keep you sated all day long.
Dog-loving families will have to leave their own canines at home at this pet-free event, but they can enjoy shows like the Disc Connected K-9 Frisbee Dog Show, where these animals show off their athletic abilities catching saucers in mid-air.
Whether you want to attend one or both days of the festival, it's a short, 20-minute drive from Gulf Shores beach houses and condominiums. Foley is a straight shot up Gulf Shores Parkway, making the festival an easy day trip if you are enjoying a vacation on the Alabama coastline.
