Thunder on the Gulf 2011, rated as one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast according to the Southeast Tourism Society, was held October 6th - 9th and was BIGGER and BETTER THAN EVER! Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) World Championships racing returns to the water in Orange Beach in October each year.
The Thunder on the Gulf takes place over four action-packed days, with powerboats qualifying on the gorgeous Gulf of Mexico on Thursday and Saturday, and the championship racing on Friday and Sunday on the 6.8 mile liquid race course (map)! The OPA World Champions are crowned Sunday evening at the Awards Ceremony.
There is so much fun to be had in between the races with the Race Village activities and a parade for the whole family. This year the parade was through Main Street at the Wharf where you could meet the racing teams and take up close photos of the boats. The party continued with a Gala held after the boat parade.
Be sure to start planning your perfect viewing spot for next year's race. The race course map is below with some of the nearby condos listed, but the entire Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Perdido Key areas are alive with excitement when the boats are in town. Whether you are a returning fan or a rookie to the races return to the beach hear the roar and feel the thunder next October!
