Shovels & Rope is an American folk duo from Charleston, South Carolina composed of husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. Hearst had performed as a solo artist for several years, while Trent had played in the group The Films. Formed in 2010, they sing harmony-driven folk, rock and country songs using two old guitars, a kick drum, a snare, a few tambourines, harmonicas, and and maybe a little keyboard sometimes. They tour constantly as a two piece, making as much noise as they can. And their name? It was the title of their first album as a self-named duo.
