Meyer Vacation Rentals Goes All Out For Winter Guests

Thursday, September 29, 2016

GULF SHORES, Ala.—Meyer Vacation Rentals is gearing up for the return of its winter guests as early as October.

Planning is under way on a list of more than 20 exclusive winter guest-focused activities that encourage visitors to explore the natural beauty and history of the Gulf Coast, make new friends and fully engage them in an outstanding vacation experience, said Sarah Kuzma, operations specialist for Meyer Vacation Rentals.

“Deepening our relationships with our winter guests as we share experiences is my favorite aspect of the winter guest activity program,” Kuzma said. “As a group, our team members and guests have the opportunity to share stories, get to know one another better and build friendships. I definitely look forward to our interactions during the winter months.”

Hailing from all over the United States, winter guests reserve beach condos and houses throughout the Northern Gulf Coast cities of Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan and Orange Beach, Ala., and Perdido Key, Fla., as much as a year in advance.

Les and Maryanne Coumbes were Meyer guests in February and will return next year. Their 2017 visit will be their third winter trip to the Alabama Gulf Coast.

“We live in upstate New York and did not want to follow the East Coast crowd to Florida,” Maryanne said. “We loved spending the month in a condo in Gulf Shores. The weather is perfect for us in February. The beach is beautiful, and the area has so much to offer snowbirds. We especially love all the attention on the winter guests.”

Maryanne continued, “I enjoy the backcountry walking trails, and we enjoy exploring the towns around the Bay. Everywhere we go we seem to meet lovely and polite people. We have made friends from Iowa and enjoy the wide variety of restaurants and senior early bird menus. Our condo was within walking distance to many stores and restaurants. We also love all the history of Alabama and spent a week traveling the state and visiting all the Civil Rights historical locations throughout the state. There is so much to offer visitors in Alabama! So we are looking forward to our next visit again in February.”

Dale Ely, another Meyer Vacation Rentals winter guest in 2016, commented on his experience, saying, “We heard from friends that the Gulf Coast was a great place to spend time away from the winter weather. The rates are reasonable, especially if you are on a fixed income.”

Mike Pressler commented similarly and said he especially loved the friendly locals and the small-town feel. “Plus, it is a much shorter trip for us than in Florida, where we used to go. We like the small-town and less-crowded February feel that this area provides.”

Joseph Locascio also said he enjoyed the less-crowded atmosphere of the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast.

“We love the area because of the beauty and because it does not have the congestion that the Florida coast has. I can make a left-hand turn safely.”

When these and about 1,000 Meyer Vacation Rentals winter guests converge on the area this winter, not only will they be escaping cold temperatures back home, but they will also be gearing up for a variety of fun activities planned exclusively for Meyer’s winter guests.

In 2016, those activities included a special “Meyer Day” at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo (also known as “The Little Zoo That Could”), trips to Wind Creek Casino in nearby Atmore, special workshops (jewelry-making, nature photography, painting and more), a charity golf tournament, a fashion show and ice cream social, a trip to New Orleans to the National World War II Museum and the French Quarter, a trip to Bellingrath Gardens and the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, a special Mardi Gras Day celebration and so much more.

Carol and Jerry Zimmer of Cincinnati spent 10 weeks at Palacio in Perdido Key as winter guests. They said they enjoy wintering on the Gulf Coast to break free from icy, snowy weather up north because it’s a manageable driving distance from their hometown and they like the local atmosphere and variety of activities.

“We love being able to winter here. The weather is fabulous, and we do not need coats,” Carol said. “This is our eighth year here.”

Jerry said he enjoys the laid-back lifestyle of the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast. “This area is not as busy as the areas our friends winter in much farther south. We also enjoy the unique cuisine. There’s no hustle and bustle—there’s no hurry about anything.”
Carol agreed. “The lack of crowds is very attractive to us.”

The Zimmers said they walk the beach daily while wintering on the Gulf Coast. “We have waked from the end of Johnson Beach all the way to Mobile Bay—88 miles. We did six miles a day. We enjoyed seeing the wreck of the Rachel (at Fort Morgan) and have seen many sea creatures along the way,” Jerry said.

The Zimmers also visited zoo and attended the fashion show and glass-blowing demo. “And, every year, we go to the Meyer office in Gulf Shores for the coffee and doughnuts before the Mardi Gras parade,” Jerry said.
