Running on the beach

Running on the beach, whether in bare feet or sneakers, offers an extra challenge because the give of the sand forces your body to work muscles you don't normally use when you jog on the street or treadmill. Cycling fans will love the bike lane that runs the length of Beach Boulevard - the southernmost road that spans Perdido Key, Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. Use your own bike or rent one locally to travel this road that affords beautiful views. It also provides a chance to take note of some great places in each of the towns, coaxing you to return for shopping, dining, or a different level of activity.

Hike the trails

Another option for particularly outdoorsy fitness-seekers is the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail in Gulf State Park. The six trails covering 11 miles include outlets for rustic backcountry hiking or short nature walks away from the beach. Paved and unpaved, long and short, these trails are often shaded by tall trees as they zigzag along canals and bayous.
