If you and your family members find yourselves on the coast of Alabama during Christmastime, you may be wondering what kinds of festivities you will find in the area.

While it is not likely that your holidays in Gulf Shores will be white with snow there will be snow-white beaches to enjoy, just like the locals do during the holidays.

The weather is typically still pleasant enough this time of year to enjoy walks in shirt-sleeves on the beach during the day and with a light sweater or jacket in the evening. And the sunsets are stunning this time of year!

There are also plenty of restaurants that will be open throughout the holiday season, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day to serve Gulf Coast-inspired holiday favorites.

If you'd like to prepare your family's favorites in your Gulf Coast home-away-from-home, each of Meyer's vacation rentals comes with a fully equipped kitchen to make cooking and baking a breeze.

You can still purchase fresh shrimp and other fresh seafood this time of year, so check out some of our favorite recipe ideas.

No matter the types of traditions you and your children normally enjoy during the yuletide season, there will be more than one opportunity for you to have fun and get into the festive spirit.

You can participate in a number of different events throughout Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, making both your vacation and your holidays more than memorable.

Traditions With A Southern Twist

Have yourself a merry little vacation with seasonal Alabama activitiesThink back to all of the Christmases you've shared with your family. Are there some common threads that tie all of these memories together? Just because you are on vacation does not mean you have to abandon these customary holiday activities altogether. You can stay true to them, while still adding an Alabama twist to these traditions.

For instance, do you typically like to go caroling or have a holiday sing-a-long with your children? Luckily for you, there are various annual opportunities in Gulf Shores that allow you to share the gift of music with your family members. The annual lighting of the city's Christmas tree at The Wharf in Orange Beach brings out local musicials as well as the high school concert band and others whose songs will no doubt get you in the holiday spirit.

The Coastal Alabama Chamber of Commerce sponsors the annual series of Coastal Christmas events in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, including the annual lighted boat parade on the Intracoastal Canal Waterway, the Merry Market shopping experience at The Orange Beach Event Center at The Wharf, and more.

Also part of the series of events is the City of Gulf Shores' Lighted Christmas Parade, which traverses down the main Hwy. 59 thoroughfare and directly in front of the Meyer Vacation Rentals office.

The evening parade begins at 6:30 p.m. and features festive lighted floats as well as appearances from holiday characters and marching bands.

As you travel from one fun event to another, enjoy the coastal cities' lights dislay as you sing along to the sounds of seasonal favorites playing on local radio stations.

Where exactly should you be heading? Well, you could always stop in at The Wharf in Orange Beach for some ice skating, Christmas shopping, dining and even visiting with Santa Claus.

Throughout the holiday season, this entertainment destination hosts ice skating sessions for visitors of all ages throughout the weekdays and weekends. What's more, you don't even have to worry about wasting valuable car space by packing your family's skates. The Wharf will provide you with rentals, which is included in the price of admission.

Need to get in any last-minute Christmas shopping? Be sure to visit the Tanger Outlets in nearby Foley to cast your net for retail bargains. At The Wharf, you'll find the most adorable unique gifts. Pick up something for your friends and family but don't forget to shop for yourself while you're there! And there are boutiques scattered throughout the 38-mile stretch of beach from Fort Morgan all the way to Perdido Key!

Toast The New Year With Coastal Fun

If you have already set your Christmas plans in stone and don't have much wiggle room in your trip itinerary, then you can still incorporate local festivities into your schedule when the new year rolls around.

You will come across various parties held in the Gulf Shores area, and you and your family can decide whether you want to make the rounds or if you want to plant yourselves in a single location for the entire New Year's Eve.

Did you and your children enjoy yourselves at The Wharf? If you did, then you should think about returning there for its annual New Year's Eve street party. Your children can participate in all kinds of kid-friendly activities like face painting, karaoke and bounce houses. At the same time, you can listen to live music up until the customary marlin drops at midnight and the fireworks go off!

And, on New Year's Day, stop in at the Flora-Bama to take part in the Annual Polar Bear Dip. The water might be cold, but the fun you'll have rushing into the surf and hanging out with your friends will warm your soul!
