Tasty strawberries & more at Baldwin County Strawberry Festival
Strawberries are a refreshing snack to bring to the beach when you rent Gulf Shores condos, but you can do more than do more than munch on these sweet berries when you attend the annual Baldwin County Strawberry Festival in Loxley, Ala., during your vacation to southern Alabama in April.
This festival, just a 45-minute drive from Gulf Shores beach houses and other rentals, has fun for the whole family, from arts and crafts exhibitors and food vendors to children's rides and games, an antique auto show and live music. The crux of the festival, strawberry shortcake, might still be the main selling point for many visitors! According to local The Independent newspaper, the festival uses more than 2,000 pounds of strawberries to create its main delicacy each year.
You can feel particularly good about sampling the region's delicious strawberry specialties knowing that funds raised from this annual event go to support Loxley Elementary School and the Association for Retarded Citizens of Baldwin County (ARCBC). Started in 1987, the event raises nearly $50,000 each year for its beneficiaries, supporting daily operations as well as helping with major investments.
Loxley Elementary School has used funds to purchase new computers for classrooms and its library, as well as upgrade playground equipment and install air conditioning in its multi-purpose building. Thanks to the Strawberry Festival funds, the ARCBC has been able to open new residential homes and purchase vans to help these residents get around.
Whether you're looking to support local Alabama institutions or taste the best strawberry shortcake around, the Baldwin County Strawberry Festival has just what you need. All members of the family will appreciate this day trip away from Gulf Shores rentals, where they can enjoy music, games and many other family-friendly festivities in the quaint Loxley Municipal Park.
