A near record-breaking blue marlin was caught off the shores of Orange Beach May 29 during the 50th Anniversary Mobile Big Game Fishing Club Tournament.

The marlin weighed in at 806 lbs., almost beating the state record.

The current record-breaking fish was caught in 2013 and weighed in at 845 lbs. Even though this year’s mega-fish was shy of the record, it was noted as the second largest blue marlin caught in Alabama and the largest blue Marlin caught in 50 years of the tournament.

Angler Robert Burroughs aboard his boat Quicktime said he caught the fish about 130 miles offshore after an almost four-hour fight. Burroughs took first prize in the tournament.

Tournament organizers said all the meat from the marlin would be donated to the One Meal organization in Mobile to help feed those in need.
