Labor Day is a perfect time for a beach getaway. It’s the end of the summer, and the last big holiday hurrah before Thanksgiving, Christmas and the dawning of a New Year.
A traditional time for families to enjoy barbecues, togetherness and relaxation, Labor Day celebrations held at the beach are sure to make the holiday even more enjoyable.
Many vacation rentals, including condos, come with grilling stations. Prep your fixings and head on down to your condo complex’s common area to light the grill. Or, if you’re staying in a beach house, many come equipped with their own grill just downstairs.
Beyond grilling, there’s plenty of opportunity for family fun. Of course, spending time at the beach is a given. The emerald-green Gulf water is comfortably warm, the sand is powder soft and sugar white, and the sun is bright, making it the perfect spot for reading a book, building a sandcastle, walking or jogging, or just watching the kids run around on the sand. Bring your chairs and umbrella, but be sure to remove them when you return to your vacation rental, as vacationers are encouraged to “leave only footprints.”
Other Labor Day activities are available throughout the Alabama Gulf Coast. There’s shopping coastal boutiques, enjoying a round of golf, charter boat fishing, to name a few.
For the third year in a row, OWA is holding its Labor Day Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Cars of all makes and models will be on display throughout the Southern-style streets of Downtown OWA, with hot rods and custom buildings lining the street.
Trophies will be awarded for every decade from 1929 to now in categories such as antiques, classics, customs, foreign, hot rods, rat rods and modern autos.
Pedestrian-friendly Downtown OWA is an entertainment district that is free to enter. Dine, snack, shop and more. Stick around for an evening fireworks show at 8:45. The show will be visible from anywhere throughout the property.
Other Downtown OWA activities might include a night enjoying the Brandon Styles Variety or Magic Show at Brandon’s dedicated theater, or the Legends in Concert show, where your favorite singers will perform their biggest hits!
Light up your Labor Day celebration at The Wharf in Orange Beach, where Labor Day activities will be held Sunday, Sept. 6.
A DJ will be playing beginning at 7 p.m., and fireworks will begin at 8:45 p.m. Following the fireworks show, the musical lights show, SPECTRA, will entertain visitors at 9 and 9:30 p.m.
Admission to the events is free, and guests are asked to adhere to social distancing and facial covering guidelines. Hand sanitizer stations have been installed throughout the property.
Throughout the weekend the Columbus replica ship Nina will be docked at The Wharf Marina and offering self-guided tours from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 4-8. Admission is $5 and kids four and under are free.
Elevate your family’s Labor Day celebration with a beach vacation in a three-bedroom condo. You’ll have plenty of room for you, the grandparents and the kids. Or, if your group includes a larger number of people, consider a house with five or more bedrooms.
