Whether you're a country, bluegrass, rock or jazz fan, the southern coast of Alabama attracts music greats throughout the year. That means you're in for a real treat when you stay at one of the many Gulf Shores area beach house or vacation condo rentals. People who call this area home sure do love their music, and you and your family can reap the benefits of what has become a daily activity.
From intimate cafes to a 10,000-seat amphitheater, the Gulf Coast comes alive with musical entertainment every night. Wondering what to expect? Here's a sample of venues that may be serving up concerts and music while you're visiting:
The Wharf Amphitheater
Often selling out, this 10,000-seat outdoor concert arena brings in headliners from today as well as oldies artists who still draw large, enthusiastic crowds. Even if a major concert is not scheduled during your stay, you can likely catch live music at one or more of the restaurants in the The Wharf's shopping and dining complex.
Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival
Each November, Gulf Shores welcomes a 10-day festival that has visitors and locals enthralled. The Southeast Tourism Society ranks the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival as one of the best in the region, not only because it attracts Grammy Award-winning artists, but also because it highlights lesser-known songwriters who are trying to make a name for themselves. Some past musicians who have taken to the stage during the festival include Billy Joe Shavers and Brett Jones, whose country songs are favorites among music lovers across the nation.
BayFest in Mobile
The city of Mobile, which is about an hour north of the beaches, welcomes a long line of music greats during BayFest each October. Bands like Journey, Willie Nelson and Al Green are only a handful of the popular acts that have performed at previous fests. This three-day fest is overflowing with shows in downtown Mobile, so you may want to decide ahead of time which concerts you'll want to see the most.
Live music at The Hangout
Every evening brings good fun at The Hangout in Gulf Shores, where you can dance the night away with the likes of bands such as Foxy Iguanas. Led by Smokey Otis, the Foxy Iguanas have a lengthy repertoire of cover songs and can take just about any request you and your family make.
No matter where you stay on the island or who you are with - a romantic 1-bedroom condo or a 6-bedroom house filled with your extended family - there will be sweet music nearby for each of you to enjoy.
