The Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast is a huge draw for fishing enthusiasts and those who are looking for a relaxed place to kick back and have some drinks with friends. In late April each year, a legendary establishment, Flora-Bama, hosts one of the biggest beach parties of the year - the Interstate Mullet Toss. While it doesn't involve fishing per se, fish play a main role in this event. A mullet may be widely known as a less-than-fashionable haircut, but it's also a type of fish, and it's one that happens to be plentiful, popular and even mystical along the Gulf Coast. It's also one that gets thrown across the Alabama-Florida border during this awesomely fun beach event each spring.

Toss your own mullet

If you're renting Gulf Shores condos or Perdido Key beach houses at
the end of April, you can't miss the chance to toss your very own mullet across the border at the Flora-Bama during this three-day event. The party starts at noon on Friday, and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and thousands of party people (including a few celebrity guests!) will gather to toss the dead fish from a 10-foot circle in Alabama across the state line into Florida. As with any event at the Flora-Bama, there will also be plenty of food, drink and live music! In fact, even the birds get
to eat - after the toss, Flora-Bama officials will feed the fish to hungry shorebirds. Other festivities, including the Miss Mullet bikini contest,
will take place at what organizers are calling "the Gulf Coast's Greatest Beach Party."

Mullets for a good cause

Now, we don't just fling fish for fun (even though it's plenty of fun!) - we fling for a good cause. For every fish tossed, a contribution will go to Local Youth Charities, including a local school program run by the Community Drug & Alcohol Council, Inc., which has community outreach programs that address drug, alcohol and tobacco use and abuse by teens as well as mental health issues and problems with violence that they face. Every year, mullet tossers raise more than $20,000 for this and other local charities, many of which are focused on youth.

Stay in Gulf Shores rentals, toss some mullets

Whether you're renting a three-bedroom Gulf Shores beach house with your family or staying in a Perdido Key condo with a bunch of friends, be sure to sign up to participate in this fun-filled event for April. You can register on the beach for $15, where you will receive an Interstate Mullet Toss T-shirt to commemorate your experience. If you manage to get this slippery fish all the way across the state line, you may qualify for the finals! Gulf Shores visitors of all ages can participate in this event.

Perhaps best of all, you can get a ride from the Flora-Bama's very own bus - no more worrying about how many bushwackers and beers you plan on drinking! If you're staying in Gulf Shores rentals, you can park at the Publix in Orange Beach, Ala., and hop on the shuttle for just $3. When you stay in Perdido Key rentals, you can get picked up by the shuttle at Winn Dixie and the Perdido Key Chamber office.
