The Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida

The sanctuary cares for injured or orphaned wildlife that is indigenous to Florida, working with local, state and federal agencies to release the animals back into the wild if possible. The kids will love seeing critters like baby otters, bald eagles and foxes. Adults can also learn more about the sanctuary's mission and the species' role in the local ecosystems.

Located in Gulf Breeze, about 40 minutes away from Perdido Key, this facility boasts 50 acres with nearly every species your youngster could dream of. Tigers, gorillas, snakes, hippopotamuses and bears all call this sanctuary home. Families can feed giraffes and spend time in the animal petting area, then head to the Australian Free-Flight Budgiery, where colorful parakeets fly free and perch on visitors as they feed them. The boardwalk also offers guests an opportunity to view the free-range preserve where rhinos, wildebeest and zebras roam.

This Gulf Shores zoo may be located in Alabama, but it's just a 25 minute drive from Perdido Key. Here, children can play with baby tigers and lemurs, though the zoo recommends calling ahead to ensure staff and animals will be available for this activity. The zoo is open every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. so families can visit all the other animals, too.
