Whether you are fishing, exploring the Fort Morgan historical site or watching the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico from the balcony of your Fort Morgan house or condo, next time you head west on Ala. Hwy. 180 (Fort Morgan Road to the locals), there’s no doubt you’ll work up an appetite.

Here are five Fort Morgan area restaurants that are “hungry” to serve you and your family.

Always Tacky, But Always Good

Located at Gulf Shores Marina a short drive east of the Fort Morgan historical site, you’ll feel like you’ve truly escaped to a simpler time and place when you step onto the dock leading to the entrance of Tacky Jacks 2.

Situated on the Mobile Bay side of Fort Morgan Road, the restaurant is reminiscent of an old-time fishing shack and dock store.

The quaint exterior opens into a lively interior where diners will delight in a variety of uniquely Gulf Coast dishes. Start off with crab claws, gator bites or Mexican Garbage (a serious mound of beef and cheese nachos topped with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and more). Entrees range from seafood salad (a yummy salad loaded with spicy shrimp and crawfish) to oyster po boys, shrimp and grits, and steamed royal reds.

A special treat for fishermen, Tacky Jacks will prepare your catch for dinner.

And, while there’s plenty of selections for your “small fries,” you grownups might want to partake of Tacky Jacks’ famous Bloody Mary or bushwhacker or a cold beer or glass of wine.

If you go for breakfast, check out the Farmer’s Omelet. It’s loaded with potatoes, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, sausage, ham, cheese and more. It’s a local favorite!

Address: 1557 Hwy. 180 West, Gulf Shores, AL 36542.

Behind The Scenes @ Behind The Pines

We’ve heard it called “a hole in the wall,” due to its nondescript location behind The Pines convenience store, but next time you’re in the Fort Morgan area, Behind The Pines Restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

The restaurant offers daily lunch specials (think fried fish or shrimp, homemade cole slaw and hot corn fritters) and even game day specials. Stop in for a cold one and enjoy some college football on a fall Saturday. You might even stumble upon karaoke night or live music on the weekend.

Oh, and Behind The Pines is home to the famous Nookie Burger. Here’s how it’s described on the menu: “Fresh, never frozen beef patty grilled to perfection. The patty is then smothered in the cheese of your choice. We then add our ‘pines special sauce’ and grilled onions and place it all on buttered buns that are hot off the grill. There is nothing like it on the Gulf Coast.”

So true! Hungry yet?

Address: 8818 Hwy. 180 West, Gulf Shores, AL 36542.

Make It Easy, Make It Pizza

Have a house full of hungry folks, and don’t want to go out? Call Fort Morgan Pizza, and they’ll deliver. Or you can stop in and pick up a “make and take” pizza to pop in the oven back at your beach vacation rental.

On the menu is a variety of specialty pizzas, cheesy bread and more.

Located at The Pines on Fort Morgan Road, the owners of Fort Morgan Pizza make feeding your crew easier than a Gulf breeze.

Coastal Cuisine @ The Coast Restaurant

Open nightly during the summer season and on Fridays and Saturdays off-season, the Coast Restaurant at the Beach Club is a fine dining experience.

The Coast features the talents of Chef Brody Olive, who brings his award-winning interpretations of Italian, Mediterranean and Southern cuisine. Enjoy new interpretations of classics like shrimp and grits along with a daily selection of fish fresh from the Gulf.

There are also entrees catering to turf lovers, such as perfectly prepared filet mignon, savory pork tenderloin and more.

Looking for something extra special? Enjoy a four-course wine dinner, where the chef pairs select wines with specially prepared cuisine. Reservations are required for wine dinners.

Address: 925 Beach Club Trail, Gulf Shores, AL 36542.

Unfussy Dining @ Sassy Bass Amazin’ Grill

The reviews say Sassy Bass Amazin’ Grill is THE place to go on Fort Morgan Road. Described as “unfussy, adventurous and all about the food and fun,” Sassy Bass serves up everything from signature libations—Painkiller, Sass on the Beach and Jamaican Me Crazy—to crab bisque, shrimp any way you like it and grilled snapper.

How does this sound? The Snapper Grill entrée is described as “Gulf caught snapper filet sautéed in lime butter and topped with our sweet chili sauce served with fried street corn and creamy scalloped potatoes.”

Or, the Chilean Sea Bass is a specialty item dusted and sautéed and served with creamy scalloped potatoes, grilled vegetables and side of citrus bearer blanc. Yum!

Kids are welcomed, too, and will find a variety of menu items ranging from grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to burgers and shrimp.

Address: 5160 Ala. Hwy. 180, Gulf Shores, AL 36542
