Get your throwing arm in shape for the world-famous Interstate Mullet Toss & Gulf Beach Party to be held April 26-28, 2019.
The 35th annual edition of the festival, which is held each year at the infamous Flora-Bama Lounge, has evolved from a fun get-together to one of the biggest beach parties on the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast.
Participants fling a dead mullet over the Florida/Alabama state line to see whose sails the farthest.
Mullet are among the more popular and plentiful fish indigenous to the area. As the only fish with a gizzard, it is said to possess mystical properties and, while known as a baitfish up the East Coast, locals love to get their fill of the fish, regardless of whether it’s fried, pan-grilled or prepared numerous other ways.
Now, how do you throw it? It’s pretty scientific. Participants enter a 10-foot circle in Florida and hurl the fish across the state line into Alabama. That’s pretty much all there is to it! Kids, adults, seniors, everyone can participate!
Simultaneously, those not throwing fish or waiting their turn are entertained with activities, music and food.
A contribution for each fish flung will go to local youth charities. Each year, the Flora-Bama raises more than $40,000 for youth organizations in both Alabama and Florida.
Celebrity tossers throw their fish at noon. Kids throw from 10 a.m. to noon. Adults throw from noon to 4 p.m. Finals are held each day at 4 p.m.
A beach condo or house in Perdido Key or Orange Beach would serve as a perfect headquarters for the Mullet Toss, regardless of whether it's all adults or you are bringing along the kids!
