The Summer 2015 Film Series at the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center features several of the most popular films available on the giant IMAX Dome theatre screen. The films listed here run throughout the summer months and are shown daily. IMAX ticket prices are $6.50 for children 2-12, $7.25 for youth 13-18 and for seniors 60+ and $8.75 for adults.  Active duty and retired military also qualify for discount ticket prices. Call the Exploreum box office at 251-208-6893 for information.  Island of Lemurs: Madagascar-Now through September 7, 2015 Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman narrates Island of Lemurs: Madagascar, the incredible true story of nature's greatest explorers - lemurs. Captured with IMAX cameras, the film takes audiences on a spectacular journey to the remote and wondrous world of Madagascar. Two exhibits featuring  U.S. exploration of outer space continue to attract visitors to the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center.  Both exhibits run through September 7, 2015.     Beyond Earth, explores mankind’s fascination with the universe through a collection of large format photography from numerous NASA expeditions, meteorites found all over the world, and artifacts from the Space Race.        The Journey to Mars exhibit showcases the history of space flight and the future of space travel. Through artifacts, models, simulators and hands-on activities visitors can experience the progression of space travel from the moon landing to the mission to put a person on Mars.      General admission to the exhibits ranges from $6.50 to $16.00. Exploreum membership includes unlimited visits to regular exhibits, free tickets for friends and discounts on IMAX films, gift shop purchases, camps, birthday parties and more.     In addition, active duty/retired military personnel with proper ID receive discounted admission rates. Discounted rates are also available for large groups and schools. Daphne Sheldrick has created an elephant sanctuary in Kenya, while Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas has set up an orphanage for orangutans in Borneo. In both cases, the young animals have been left alone after their parents were killed, by either poachers or similar human incursions into their natural habitats. On August 1st, 2015 the Bayou La Batre Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the South Mobile County Tourism Authority, proudly presents the second annual Bayou La Batre Kayak Classic. This fishing tournament will be held along the coastline of Bayou La Batre and the Gulf of Mexico. The tournament will begin at 6:00 AM and scales close at 3:00 PM with award ceremony at 4:00. Compete for over 33 different awards including Master and Junior Angler divisional titles! Junior anglers will be allowed to fish from pier and land as well as kayaks! Family and friends… you are invited too! A full day of festivities including live music, fresh food, cold spirits and tons of fun will be in store for you at tournament headquarters at the Bayou La Batre City Docks.The band will be Physical Therapy and will be performing from 12-4 p.m. **The Bayou Bait shop will have discounted bait for anyone who is fishing in the Bayou La Batre Kayak Classic.**
