The format will feature tournament registration and captain's meeting Wednesday, fishing Thursday through Saturday and weigh in Friday and Saturday afternoons. The event wraps up with an awards brunch on Sunday. This year, a change in tournament rules will allow blue marlin to be weighed in. The minimum size for a tournament-legal blue marlin is now 103 inches. This is in addition to the all-release division for billfish and the weigh in for dolphin, tuna and wahoo. The OBBC has continued to serve as a very important fundraiser for marine conservation projects, contributing to The Billfish Foundation and the Coastal Conservation Association. Weigh In begins Fri., May 17 from 7- 10 p.m. and Sat., May 18 from 6-10 p.m.

As part of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation’s Discovery Saturday series, please join 98 year old retired Marine Colonel Justin “Mac” Miller as he shares his first-hand experiences during World War II at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 18 at the National Naval Aviation Museum.


Col. Miller was born in 1914 and attended the Naval Academy, class of 1937. Mac left the Naval Academy to join the Marines and entered flight training in 1940. In 1942, he attended the USMC Command and Staff School in Quantico before going to San Diego where he was instrumental in establishing VMF-217. The squadron trained in the F4F and was deployed in December 1943 to the South Pacific. VMF-217 transitioned to the F4U and flew combat missions in the Solomon Islands in 1944 against the Japanese at Rabaul, New Guinea followed by combat missions in the Mariannas. In October 1944, Col Miller took command of VMF-321. He remained in the Marine Corps until 1948 when he joined the Reserves. Col Miller earned three Distinguished Flying Crosses, 11 Air Medals and four battle stars during WWII.

As the boating season approaches, the Orange Beach Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a “SAFE BOATING” course on Saturday, May 18th. The course will be held at the Orange Beach Community Center (27235 Canal Road) from 7:45 AM to 4 PM. 


 


            “About Boating Safely” is a popular 8-hour course presented by experts from Team Coast Guard. It is designed for recreational boaters and PWC operators. Boating families are encouraged to take the class together.  The USCG Auxiliary will give instruction on boating laws, safety equipment, boat handling and navigation.  In addition, boating problems and serious boating incidents will be discussed.


 


            Successful completion of the course and its exam earns the student a certificate, which meets the examination requirement for a Alabama Boating Operators License and discounts from some boat insurance companies.


         


            Registration for the course is required and can be made by calling John Griggs at 251-955-1443.  The cost is  $35 per person, which covers the textbook, instructional materials and lunch, if two family members share a book, the cost is $45.  The course is open to ages 12 and above. The class size will be limited to 30 students.  If you are unable to attend this class, additional classes will be held at the same location on, June 22nd and August 10th.


 


          The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer organization whose primary mission is recreational boating safety.  In addition the auxiliary assists the US Coast Guard in watch standing, safety patrols and conducts vessel safety checks.

Campfires, live music and s’mores will be the scene as the City of Gulf Shores hosts its first S’mores on the Shore event of the season. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 23 at the west end of the Gulf Shores Public Beach. 


 


These family-friendly events started in 2010 and have quickly become the perfect recipe for families of all ages who are looking for a little free fun and excitement.


 


“Each year S’mores on the Shore seems to grow in popularity,” said Programs and Events Supervisor, Lesley Dethloff. “When you combine our beautiful beaches, live music, campfires and s’mores, it really does make for an incredible night.”

S’mores on the Shores will feature live music from Sugarcane Jane, campfires and all of the makings for s’mores. 


 


Families are encouraged to bring their blankets, chairs, friends and family to join the fun and relax on the beautiful, white sand of the Gulf Shores Public Beach.
