Alabama Gulf Coast Birding Trail
Natives exist peacefully in a natural setting and are joined on a regular basis by visitors from near and far. Not only are we referring to our human population but also to the many species of birds at our coastal wonderland. The Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast provides a rich environment for a wide variety of birds to thrive on a year-round basis. Plus, the entire coastal region exists in the
Flyway Migratory Path - (
Definition), thus furnishing a haven for migratory birds in spring and fall each year.
Some of the native species include herons, egrets, sandpipers, osprey, seagulls, ducks, pelicans and cranes. The abundance of water of all kinds—i.e. gulf, lagoon, bays, canals, rivers, etc.—creates an excellent habitat for a wide variety of waterfowl and seabirds. Often it is advantageous to observe by boat the birds in their natural surroundings, and there are experienced boat captains who can guide you to the best spots to witness birds in the wild.
"This is one of the most important stopover sites in the United States for tropical migratory birds."

Each spring and fall our coast comes alive with migratory birds as they travel between the northern states and the Southern Hemisphere. In fact, the
Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge (
map) on the peninsula of Fort Morgan is the first landfall and feeding grounds for these tiny winged travelers upon their return to North America. Now that’s a long trip! These small creatures spend time feeding on the berries and vegetation prior to departing once again for their northern homes. Among the visiting species you’ll find hummingbirds, swallows, wrens, buntings, warblers and literally dozens of neo-tropical migrating species.
Join the
HummerBird Study Group twice each year to monitor the health and well-being of these awesome birds. Be sure to bring your camera and record the phenomenon. Another bonus is the chance to hold these tiny birds in your hand and gently release them back into the wild. More details on this educational research organization, and their research facility near the entrance of Fort Morgan, may be found at
