3nd Annual Baldwin County Veterans Appreciation Day

The celebration will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the opening of historical war exhibits, re-enactments and 1940s Big Band Music by Bob Jennings and The Classics. A special Korean War Veterans recognition ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. to honor the brave men and women who served abroad and at home during the Korean War. This part of the celebration will close at 4:00 p.m. The Coliseum doors will reopen to begin seating at 6:00 p.m. for the United States Air Force Band Airmen of Note Concert that will begin at 7:00 p.m. (Seating is not reserved - first come, first seated). The Airmen of Note is one of eight performing units of the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C., and is the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. Originally created in 1950 to carry on the tradition of Glenn Miller’s Army Air Corps dance band, the Airmen of Note is one of today’s few touring big bands, and has attracted 18 of the finest musicians in the country, As a result, it has earned an international reputation as one of the finest and most versatile big bands of its kind in the world. All events throughout the day are FREE to the public.

Digital Photography Workshop

Lighting of the Island Christmas Tree at The Wharf

Alabama Gulf Coast Birding Trail

Natives exist peacefully in a natural setting and are joined on a regular basis by visitors from near and far. Not only are we referring to our human population but also to the many species of birds at our coastal wonderland. The Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast provides a rich environment for a wide variety of birds to thrive on a year-round basis. Plus, the entire coastal region exists in the Flyway Migratory Path - (Definition), thus furnishing a haven for migratory birds in spring and fall each year.

Some of the native species include herons, egrets, sandpipers, osprey, seagulls, ducks, pelicans and cranes. The abundance of water of all kinds—i.e. gulf, lagoon, bays, canals, rivers, etc.—creates an excellent habitat for a wide variety of waterfowl and seabirds. Often it is advantageous to observe by boat the birds in their natural surroundings, and there are experienced boat captains who can guide you to the best spots to witness birds in the wild.

Each spring and fall our coast comes alive with migratory birds as they travel between the northern states and the Southern Hemisphere. In fact, the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge (map) on the peninsula of Fort Morgan is the first landfall and feeding grounds for these tiny winged travelers upon their return to North America. Now that’s a long trip! These small creatures spend time feeding on the berries and vegetation prior to departing once again for their northern homes. Among the visiting species you’ll find hummingbirds, swallows, wrens, buntings, warblers and literally dozens of neo-tropical migrating species.

Join the HummerBird Study Group twice each year to monitor the health and well-being of these awesome birds. Be sure to bring your camera and record the phenomenon. Another bonus is the chance to hold these tiny birds in your hand and gently release them back into the wild.
