Check out local artists at The Hot Shop in Orange Beach
Some of the region's most talented artists can be found at the Coastal Arts Center in Orange Beach, Alabama. Some of this exceptional talent can be found at work in The Hot Shop, where they have free reign to experiment with new designs as visitors walk through the studio. This public-access glass-blowing facility is the only one in the state, and from Tuesday through Saturday, visitors can participate in an open class. You and your older children can enroll in classes or private lessons taught by a master glassblower, and everyone can stop by to watch the pros create truly gorgeous pieces.
Getting to know the artists
Adam Burges is the newest artist-in-residence at The Hot Shop. He recently spoke with the Press-Register about why he's so passionate about the art form.
"I couldn't be happier right now, working with an amazing group of people - they're doing something special," said Burges. "Most of the time people don't let you play with their toys, but here we invite the public in to try."
If you go to The Hot Shop to watch Burges make glass sculptures, there's no way to predict what he could be working on at any given moment. One day, he might be making an abstract sculpture with brilliant colors, and the next, a symmetrical vase that you can purchase and take home as a unique souvenir.
What you can learn
While you shouldn't expect to create something of the same caliber as the artists who have been working at The Hot Shop since it opened in 2009, you can still create gorgeous works of art within just a few hours when you sign up for a class. Your instructor will outfit you with all of the proper safety gear and have you shaping, blowing and sculpting in no time.
With the beautiful Gulf Coast waters as your inspiration, you can create a work of art that will always remind you of your vacation in this incredible locale.
