Free Hiking and Backpacking Seminars Backpacking 101
10/11/2008
5 Rivers Delta Resource Center welcomes author and renowned outdoors enthusiast Joe Cuhaj of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society. Cuhaj will conduct a series of hiking and backpacking seminars at 5 Rivers – Alabama’s Delta Resource Center in Spanish Fort, right down the road from the USS Alabama Battleship. September 13 is the next one, entitled “13 Essentials of Day Hiking”. The easiest way to get into hiking and backpacking is with a simple day hike, but even that requires some planning. We’ll teach you how to get started in this free workshop from 1pm to 2pm.
Daphne’s Cuhaj, who penned “Hiking Alabama” and co-authored “Paddling Alabama,” will talk about some of the beautiful hiking opportunities in Alabama, for both beginners and enthusiasts alike. Bring your questions about where to go, how to get there, and what equipment you need. Discover anew what Alabama has to offer, and introduce your family to the simple fun of taking a walk in the woods.
The workshops, which begin at 1 p.m., are one-hour long with the exception of Backpacking 101, which will last two hours.
The remaining seminar schedule is:
September 13 - Essentials of Day Hiking
October 11 - Backpacking 101
November 15 - Backpack Cooking
January 10, 2009 - Hiking with Children (and the Dog)
February 7, 2009 - Trail Safety

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo
Each of the 300+ animals at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo has a story to tell. Many
of them are rescued from various dangerous situations or they have traveled to our
gulf coast from a variety of origins. The dedication of the zoo staff and the Zoo
director, Patti Hall, is nothing short of extraordinary.
This loyalty was put to the supreme test with animal evacuations for Hurricanes
Ivan, Dennis and Katrina – a feat never performed by any zoo in the United States.
Local and national media has resulted in a 13-part television series on Animal Planet
entitled “The Little Zoo that Could.” The one-hour show premiered on Wednesday,
February 15, 2006 and will continue to air for 12 additional weeks at 8:00 p.m.
Central Time. Animal Planet is not only telling the story of our Alabama Gulf Coast
Zoo but also building an awareness of our beautiful coast.
Education is an important mission of the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo therefore school
groups often visit. One week each summer is devoted to Zoo Camp for various age
groups and this educational experience is very popular for local residents as well
as visitors.
Meyer Real Estate’s Family Fun entertainment packages include zoo visits along with
many other fun activities (ask our Vacation Package Coordinator about the details).
Each winter we schedule a Meyer Day at the Zoo for our Winter Guests that includes
an animal show. This event is always one of the top choices of our winter customers
and the feedback is overwhelmingly positive.
Memberships for individuals and families are available for purchase along with zoo
merchandise in the gift shop. Sponsorships are also methods for raising funds that
allow the community and many outside the community to contribute to this worthy
cause. To learn how you can contribute to the restoration of the Alabama Gulf Coast
Zoo and possible relocation to “high ground”,
